We must get fitter if we’re to afford the future

A new article in HOT (Hastings on-line community newsletter) is an extended interview with Professor Scarlett McNally, local surgeon in Eastbourne, and a previous Chair of Bespoke.

Interviewed by Anna Sabin, Scarlett describes evidence showing that a lack of exercise has caused worsening health for people over decades. Road traffic collisions, pollution, and congestion are also very bad for health. It has alarming statistics about the increasing and unaffordable need for social care. Much of this would be preventable with better strength and health. The article laments that money intended for cycle lanes in Eastbourne was used up in consultations. There is some hope. Other places have safer, more active, healthier communities across all ages with simple measures encouraging walking, wheeling, cycling, and public transport. We cannot afford not to change.

The article’s pictures by Anna Sabin, show Scarlett cycling around critical areas of Eastbourne – the ring road, hospital, and seafront.
