Kidical Mass: Saturday 15th October 2022

An easy-going, family-friendly bike ride around Eastbourne

Bespoke is organising Eastbourne’s first Kidical Mass on Saturday 15th October. It’s part of a world-wide movement – where kids and adults of all ages ride together on bicycles & scooters through the streets of their community.

Why?

To experience the delight of riding slowly around town in a large, friendly group. And, in so doing, powerfully make the case for safer, greener and quieter streets & public spaces.

Much of Eastbourne’s elegant town centre remains dominated by motor vehicles, with serious implications for air quality – reduce car numbers helping to address the poor air quality that causes 60 related deaths a year and effecting productivity. Traffic congestion and injuries from collisions are also on the rise.

With one in five children suffering from obesity and one in three adults the opportunity to walk and cycle would save a fortune for the NHS and greatly enhance Eastbourne’s potential for tourism. As the UK’s Chief Medical Officer put it: “If physical activity were a drug, we would refer to it as a miracle cure, due to the great many illnesses it can prevent and help treat.”

Safe, traffic-calmed streets are a boon for local shops & cafes, and they enable children to play and interact with older generations. They would be a powerful symbol of Eastbourne’s intent to embrace a cleaner, greener and healthier future – at a time when leading scientists say we have to make “rapid, deep and immediate” cuts to global greenhouse gas emissions to avert climate breakdown.

When & where?

Saturday 15th October 2022 – meet in Gildredge Park, Eastbourne near the public toilets (Saffrons Road entrance) at 2pm. We’ll set off on a short, guided and fully marshalled ride through the town centre at 2.30pm – taking in the seafront, Towner Art Gallery and Little Chelsea – and returning to Gildredge Park by 3.30pm.

Join us and make your voices heard! This is the first of many Kidical Masses!
